Disney FROZEN Ice Dig Activity for Kids

In need of a FROZEN activity for kids?  I've got a fun summer activity for a FROZEN party or just to keep your kids busy on a hot day.

It's hot outside, but my child is still obsessed with FROZEN.  Which got me thinking that we needed some kind of FROZEN summer fun.  While checking out the sand toys at Target this idea came to me and I knew we had to try making a Disney FROZEN Ice Dig.  It's easy to do, you can put it in your freezer and forget about it until you're desperate for an activity and quite frankly it's a great way to cool your child down and entertain them.

You'll need a cheap sand mold - this perfect piece hails from the summer fun aisles at Target for the very expensive price of $1.  Start with your child's favorite FROZEN character.  In our home Elsa is the obvious favorite.  You can grab these FROZEN Magiclip characters for just a few dollars.  I added a few random little accessories that were floating around in our bin-o-plastic things so there would be other items to dig out and not just one big thing.

If your mold does not have a flat top you'll need something to hold it upright.  You can use newspaper and fashion a little stand if you like.  I happened to have these (super random) taco stands floating around my kitchen which had never been used and on a whim I tried them out to see if they would work.  Lo and behold, they were a perfect fit to hold the castle upside down.

Next you'll want to put a bit of water in the mold.  I'd say fill it about 1/3 of the way.  Then in goes Elsa, Sven, Olaf or whomever your heart desires.  In order to keep Elsa suspended and not have her head sink all the way to the bottom where it would be easy to dig out, I grabbed a piece of tape and actually taped the bottom of her dress to the top of the mold.  It worked like a charm.

I stuck the mold in the freezer and went about my morning.  An hour or two later I came back, removed the tape and had a suspended Elsa.

Next is adding the rest of the water and other little items you might put in.  This is slightly tricky because you want the water to be as COLD as possible so it doesn't melt your existing ice.  Do this quickly, drop the other little toys in and stick it back in the freezer as fast as you can.

I think it's best to let this freeze overnight, but if you're in a hurry you can check and see where you're at.  When it's done freezing you can run a bit of water over the mold to release your ice palace with Elsa frozen inside.

When you pull it out your child will be able to get glimpses of what's in there but probably not see everything which if you ask me is kind of exciting.  Next you'll want to hook them up with some excavation tools.  I think sunglasses are a must because you just never know when you're chipping away at ice.  I'm sure Kristoff would have worn glasses like these Babiators if he had them at his disposal.  A few spoons will work, obviously nothing sharp or dangerous.

Let your child take the ice mold outside where I'd venture to say the sun and temperature will help their excavation process along.  As they chip away, treasures will start revealing themselves.

And of course, they will get to save Elsa from her very FROZEN world.  Which is kind of awesome on a hot summer day for your FROZEN obsessed child.  No mess for you to clean, it's just water. They get a cool new toy and something to do for an hour.  You get a chance to read a magazine or I don't know, breathe?
