DIY Bow tie Tissue Paper Topiary

As I was thinking about decor that would work for a party related to Justin Timberlake's The 20/20 Experience album release I came up with these bowtie tissue paper topiaries.  I wasn't even thinking of them as cute engagement party, wedding, prom or black and white party decor but they totally work for all of those themes.

The best part is that they're surprisingly easy to make and would you believe me if I told you I made 2 of them for about $16 total?

Okay, here is how to make them.  You'll need:

-A Styrofoam or similar style topiary base.  I found these at Walmart for $5.97.  You can also make your own if you're a glutton for punishment.
-A 20 sheet pack of tissue paper
-A box of basic silver thumb tacks
-Crepe paper
-An optional second tissue paper color

When you take the tissue paper out of the package cut it into eighths.  The pieces will be smaller scale rectangles.  Grab a rectangle in the center and give it a twist or two.  You'll wind up with a wispy looking piece like this.

Then stick a thumbtack through the part you've been holding in your fingers as you twisted.  Fasten it to the topiary mold at the bottom.

You'll continue to repeat this as you go around the bottom and eventually work your way up.  This is the perfect activity to do with an older child on a rainy day.

If you see any gaps where the foam is showing through just fill in with extra tissue paper pieces.

Eventually you'll  get to the top.  This took me about 30 minutes working by myself and was a wonderful alternative to watching yet another Team Umizoomi episode with a sick little Kayla.

Here's what it looks like when you finish the actual tree part.  Now for the base you just grab your crepe paper, tape it on and start wrapping it around the base.

When you get to the top cut and tape the crepe paper in place.  Don't worry about the tape being there, it will get covered with tissue.

Create the same type of tissue puffs you did for the top of the topiary - the only difference here is I doubled up the tissue paper to make them thicker so I only had to use about 7 or 8 puffs for the whole bottom and it looked very full.
